Human Schwann cells

Human Schwann cells are specialized glial cells of the peripheral nervous system (PNS) that ensheath peripheral axons and support axonal function and peripheral nerve homeostasis. They include myelinating Schwann cells, which form myelin around individual large-caliber axons, and non-myelinating Schwann cells, which support groups of small unmyelinated axons within Remak bundles. Following peripheral nerve injury, Schwann cells undergo substantial phenotypic plasticity and adopt a repair state that supports axonal survival, regeneration, guidance, and subsequent remyelination.
