Biochemical Applications
In microbiome research, caproic acid is typically used at concentrations ranging from 0.5 to 2 mM to disrupt pathogenic biofilms, including those formed by Clostridium difficile and Candida albicans, primarily through membrane permeabilization mechanisms while preserving commensal microbial populations. In metabolic studies, medium-chain fatty acids such as caproic acid are preferentially oxidized in liver mitochondria, where they are converted into ketone bodies, providing an alternative energy source for neuronal tissues, particularly in conditions such as hypoalbuminemia. Additionally, in protein engineering, caproic anhydride is utilized for Nε-acylation of lysine residues, enabling modulation of protein stability and aggregation properties.
