Anti-FSH CE/IVD for IHC - Neuropathology

Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH, follitropin) is a heterodimeric glycoprotein hormone synthesized and secreted by gonadotroph cells of the anterior pituitary gland. As a key component of the hypothalamic–pituitary–gonadal axis, FSH regulates ovarian follicular development in females and supports spermatogenesis in males through activation of the follicle-stimulating hormone receptor (FSHR). The hormone consists of a common α-subunit shared with other pituitary glycoprotein hormones and a hormone-specific β-subunit (FSHB), which confers biological specificity. Because FSH expression is predominantly restricted to pituitary gonadotroph cells, it serves as an important marker of gonadotroph differentiation in pituitary pathology.

Biological Significance of FSH

  • Glycoprotein hormone produced by anterior pituitary gonadotroph cells.
  • Essential regulator of reproductive function, folliculogenesis, and spermatogenesis.
  • The FSHβ subunit confers hormonal specificity and is a principal target for immunohistochemical detection.
  • In normal pituitary tissue, FSH is expressed by a subset of gonadotroph endocrine cells, frequently alongside luteinizing hormone (LH).

Diagnostic Utility of FSH in Neuropathology

  • Primarily used for the classification and characterization of gonadotroph-lineage pituitary neuroendocrine tumors (PitNETs).
  • Supports identification of functioning and clinically nonfunctioning gonadotroph PitNETs.
  • Interpreted alongside SF1, LHβ, PIT1, TPIT, and other pituitary markers to establish tumor lineage and improve diagnostic accuracy.
  • Typically demonstrates cytoplasmic staining in FSH-producing pituitary cells and neoplasms.

Key Features of CE/IVD Anti-FSH Antibodies

  • Validated for immunohistochemical staining of formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tissue sections.
  • Commonly directed against the FSHβ subunit to enhance analytical specificity.
  • Designed for sensitive and reproducible detection of gonadotroph cells and gonadotroph-lineage PitNETs.
  • Compatible, depending on manufacturer validation, with routine manual and automated IHC workflows.
  • CE/IVD-certified reagents support standardized in vitro diagnostic testing and consistent staining performance.
