Animal-free stem cell factors are recombinant proteins and synthetic peptides that regulate the self-renewal, proliferation, and differentiation of pluripotent and multipotent stem cells, and are both discovered and produced without the use of animal-derived materials at any stage. Stem cell research has historically relied on culture systems supplemented with fetal bovine serum (FBS), feeder layers, and animal-derived extracellular matrix proteins such as Matrigel. These components introduce undefined and variable mixtures of proteins, growth factors, and hormones that compromise experimental reproducibility and pose risks of contamination with viruses, prions, and mycoplasma. Animal-free stem cell factors address these limitations by providing sequence-defined, highly reproducible, and ethically produced reagents that support fully defined, xeno-free culture systems.
Applications
Pluripotent stem cell maintenance and expansion. Animal-free FGF2, Activin A, and other factors support the feeder-free maintenance and expansion of human pluripotent stem cells (PSCs) in an undifferentiated state.
Directed differentiation. Animal-free factors direct the differentiation of PSCs into specific lineages, including definitive endoderm, mesoderm, ectoderm, cardiomyocytes, endothelial cells, neurons, and hematopoietic progenitors. Sequential roles of BMP-4, VEGF, and FGF-2 have been established for the generation of CD34+ vascular progenitor cells from human embryonic stem cells under animal product-free conditions.
Organoid culture. Animal-free growth factors including EGF, Noggin, R-spondin, and FGF10 support the growth and maintenance of intestinal, neural, and other organoids in fully defined culture systems. Mouse intestinal organoids cultured with synthetic EGF and Noggin-like peptides showed strong growth and structural integrity.
Hematopoietic stem cell research. A complete portfolio of animal origin-free and carrier protein-free growth factors and cytokines for hematopoietic stem cell culture includes G-CSF, Flt3L, SCF, and TNF-alpha. High-quality growth factors are essential for the maintenance and proliferation of robust, reproducible, and physiologically relevant hematopoietic cultures.
Cellular agriculture. High-purity, animal-free growth factors produced in efficient microbial fermentation processes provide reliable solutions for cultivated meat, fish, fat, and dairy production.
