Roswell Park Memorial Institute (RPMI) 1640 Medium is suitable for a variety of mammalian cells including HeLa，Jurkat， MCF-7，PC-12，human leukemic cells，PBMC，astrocytes, and carcinomas.

RPMI 1640 contains phenol red, sodium bicarbonate, L-alanyl-L-glutamine and HEPES. Compared to L-glutamine, L-alanyl-L-glu-tamine is more stable in solutions and reduces the build-up of toxic ammonia. This makes it a good substitute for L-glutamine.
