Bioactivity
Description
Aristolochic acid B (Aristolochic Acid II) is a natural product from the Aristolochaceae taxon and is one of the main components of aristolochic acid. Aristolochic acid is a mutagen and carcinogen, and Aristolochic acid B (Aristolochic Acid II) can show a greater carcinogenic risk in vivo than Aristolochic acid I.
In vivo
METHODS: Aristolochic acid B (Aristolochic Acid II) (5 mg/kg, intragastrically, 5 times a week for 6 weeks) was compared for DNA adduct formation and mutagenicity in the kidneys of gptδ transgenic mice.
RESULTS Aristolochic acid B (Aristolochic Acid II) induced mutations at a frequency nearly two-fold higher than that induced by aristolochic acid I, showing a higher carcinogenic risk in vivo than aristolochic acid I, which may be at least partly the result of its elevated levels in the kidneys and plasma.
