Human astrocytes are specialized glial cells of the central nervous system (CNS) that contribute to neuronal support, synaptic regulation, metabolic homeostasis, ion and neurotransmitter balance, and regulation of the blood–brain barrier (BBB). Human astrocytes exhibit substantial regional and functional heterogeneity, with properties that can differ from those of rodent astrocytes, supporting their use in human-focused neuroscience research.
